Renovation or New Interiors: How to Decide What to Keep
A room-by-room way to assess existing finishes, services and furniture before replacing them.
Start with your home and household
Inspect the condition and usability of flooring, plumbing, wiring, doors and existing furniture. Keep sound items that fit the new plan, and budget for repairs where hidden wear could affect new work. Add the relevant measurements and product requirements to the room brief, then compare the proposed layout at full scale before ordering.
A common mistake to avoid
Do not cover a damp, damaged or unsafe surface with new finishes. Identify and resolve the underlying issue first. Confirm the final choice against the actual site, the manufacturer's guidance and the people who will use the room.
Before you finalize
- Measure the room and note fixed services, openings and clear walking routes.
- Compare material samples and written specifications, not just names or images.
- Record the agreed scope, budget, installation details and maintenance needs.
