How to Write a Useful Interior Design Brief for Your Home

Turn household needs, reference images and practical limits into a brief a designer can act on.

Start with your home and household

For each room, note the users, daily activities, items to store, preferred feel and non-negotiables. Add a few reference images with a sentence explaining what you like in each one. Add the relevant measurements and product requirements to the room brief, then compare the proposed layout at full scale before ordering.

A common mistake to avoid

A folder of inspiration images alone does not explain your budget, dimensions or maintenance preferences. Add those constraints to the brief. Confirm the final choice against the actual site, the manufacturer's guidance and the people who will use the room.

Before you finalize

  • Measure the room and note fixed services, openings and clear walking routes.
  • Compare material samples and written specifications, not just names or images.
  • Record the agreed scope, budget, installation details and maintenance needs.
